The playground

So, yesterday we decided to walk to the ice cream shop. It is just over 3 blocks away and we walk by Ellie and Josh’s future elementary school along the way (it takes up two blocks — 1 1/2 if we cut the corner). We had our ice cream and decided to stop at the school on the way back. Josh and Ellie love playing on the playground. Ellie gravitated towards the big swirly slide. She went down on her own and a 6 year old boy followed her and sorta caught her at the bottom. He said something to Ellie and she turned around and said in a loud voice, “don’t say that to my face!”

Ellie then started climbing back up the slide as the boy followed and passed by her. He said a few mean things and she asked him how old he was. He said he was 6 and Ellie told him she was 3. He again said something mean (e.g., something like, “3 year olds are babies”). Ellie wasn’t phased…She then asked him what his name was and they exchanged names. Ellie made some more small talk and he continued to respond and got nicer and nicer. He went down the slide first and she followed. The slide is enclosed so you can’t see in, but you can see their shadows. He stopped about 1/2 way down and she crashed into him. They both laughed for a bit as they scooted slowly down the rest of the way. By the time they popped out the bottom they were like best friends. He ran over and proudly told his mom that he had made Ellie laugh. Ellie called him back over and told him he was a great friend. She chased him around the playground for a while longer. It was pretty neat to see her not back down and even defuse the situation.
